Advice to carriers of humanitarian aid

Border crossing procedure, information about the cargo and its recipient. What should carriers of humanitarian cargo from abroad to Ukraine pay attention to? What features of logistics should be considered in advance? Oleksandr Kyrylyuk, our expert manager of the ZAMMLER GROUP International Trucking Department, shares his own experience and advice.

Firstly, and perhaps the most important  thing, the driver must know what exactly he is transporting.

Usually, the driver fills out the customs declaration at the border. He takes responsibility for what he imports into Ukraine. So make sure that he has information about the list, weight and quantity of goods. Let it be an approximate list, but it should be.

Oleksandr Kyrylyuk notes that it often happens that benefactors collect or buy very different things abroad – clothes, hygiene products, products, medical supplies or household items. Make an agreement with them in advance so that they will make a list of the contents of the cargo for you.  This will significantly reduce the time of filling out the declaration and facilitate the border crossing procedure.

The next thing to understand is that not all border crossing points allow humanitarian cargo.

It is important to take this into account when building a route so that you do not have to go to another checkpoint from near the border itself.

For example, on the Polish side, large-tonnage humanitarian cargo passes through the points: “Dorogusk-Yagodin” and “Korchova-Krakivets”. You can familiarize yourself with the specifics of the work of these and other points in detail on the website of the State Customs Service.

The carrier must know whom he is helping – check the recipient of the cargo.

Oleksandr Kyrylyuk, the head of the international road transport department of ZAMMLER GROUP, says that a reliable addressee is one of the factors of successful border crossing. For example, if you are carrying cargo for a well-known fund or regional military administration, then there are fewer chances of additional questions or checks by border guards. If you are providing aid to a small organization, check the availability of registration and other documents to avoid surprises at the border.

Another tip – find out the exact address of the warehouse or hub where you have to deliver the cargo.

This will help avoid queuing or downtime. Contact their representatives to clarify the work schedule.

Oleksandr Kyrylyuk explains that the driver must be sure that there will be someone to receive and unload him. Usually, humanitarian aid from abroad is brought to one large warehouse, unloaded there, and delivered to other regions or locations by other means of transport.

Finding charitable help is only half the battle. Delivering it quickly, safely and without unforeseen situations is an equally important component. So take care of the details in advance.
